Mastering Concertos Conducting Masterclass

Learn the Art of Conducting Orchestra With Soloist

Conducting an orchestra with soloist is among the most daunting challenges conductors face. Recognizing that opportunities to develop the skills needed to accompany a soloist were few and far between, Maestros Gutter and Gambetta created the Mastering Concertos Conducting Masterclass in 2016. This remarkable, one-of-a-kind course for conductors and soloists combines daily instruction from world-class master teachers with practical experience conducting concertos with professional orchestra and soloist.

Curriculum and Tuition

The Institute will accept up to 8 conductors for the Mastering Concertos Conducting Masterclass. After acceptance the conducting faculty will use conductor and soloist videos to assign each conductor 2 concertos from the accepted soloists’ repertoire. The conductor curriculum includes six 20-minute instructional sessions with orchestra and soloist, six 15-minute instructional sessions with soloist and piano accompaniment, 20 minutes of video review with the conducting faculty plus a general rehearsal and a concert performance of up to two movements (depending on length) from the two concertos studied during the course. The Institute faculty will also give seminars focusing on score study and transposition, daily Embodied Conducting℠ instruction and a special round table discussion for students and faculty about the challenges and rewards of collaboration between conductors and soloists. The $2,895 US tuition also covers the cost of a private hotel room with breakfast.

Outstanding Conductor & Soloist Awards

The Mastering Concertos Conducting Masterclass faculty may award a professional return engagement with the Vidin Sinfonietta during the following season to one outstanding conductor and soloist. Award recipients are responsible for travel expenses; hotel accommodations are provided by the Sinfonietta.

Institute alumni receive a $200 US scholarship. Conductors attending Mastering Concertos and the Advanced Conducting Academy receive a US $400 US discount. Alumni scholarship recipients receive a $200 US multi-program discount. Conductors and soloists attending Mastering Concertos together receive a 10% discount: $250 for conductors and $200 for soloists. The maximum discount allowed is $400.

Mastering Concertos Schedule

Wednesday, July 13 is arrival day. Plan to arrive in Sofia no later than 15:00 local time. Students make the trip from the airport to Vidin on the Institute coach. You’ll have time for supper at one of several nearby restaurants after check-in at the Rovno Hotel.

Instruction begins on Thursday, July 14 with a morning welcome session followed by score Q and A with faculty for conductors and initial meetings with master teachers for soloists. The first session with piano accompaniment begins at 5:00 pm.

Morning sessions start at 9:30 on Friday, July 16. Each conductor/soloist pair works 20 minutes with full orchestra.

Maestro Gambetta leads afternoon Embodied Conducting sessions that help conductors improve connections between their movements and musical intentions.

Soloists arrange 30-minute daily coaching sessions with their master teacher. All soloists receive at least 180 minutes of one-on-one private coaching.

Evening sessions with piano accompaniment provide students with 15-minutes of additional instructional time to work on the next morning’s repertoire with orchestra.

The curriculum also includes weekly score study and musicianship seminars as well as Hindemith based hand independence exercises for conductors and additional group masterclasses for soloists

All conductors and soloists perform up to two concerto movements (depending on movement length) on at least one of two public concerts on 22 and 23 July.

Students depart for Sofia Airport on the night of July 23 for early morning departures on Sunday July 24.

  • 2019 Mastering Concertos conductor

I can't say enough about the two people I had the opportunity to work with this summer. It was truly special getting a chance to conduct the Sibelius Violin Concerto, and Georgy played masterfully.
